Invitation to Volunteer Dinnere
January 29, 2017

Greetings, Vasa Volunteers!

My name is Kristin Rylands, Vasa 2017 Volunteer Coordinator. I am a Board Member and have worked the Vasa ever since Timber Ridge and North American Vasa became partners.

First, I want to welcome you to our annual Volunteer Dinner at St. Francis High School on January 29, 2017.

That is the Vasa way of thanking you for being a volunteer.  (And we have a special gift just for you.  Hint: it is stylish and keeps your head warm.) We will also be identifying your assignment for the race weekend and answering any questions you might have. Hope you can join us. Bring a friend too!

Second, can you help me update my database by  telling me in what capacity you volunteered at last year's race?                    Thanks again for all you have done.                                                                                                                                        Looking forward to seeing you at St. Francis High School on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at 5:30 p.m.

Midwest Nordic Rendezvous
January 07, 2017

What happens when the North American Vasa (NAV), the Vasa Ski Club and the Professional Ski Instructors Association collaborate to host a weekend of instructional clinics for ALL AGES AND SKILL LEVELS?  The Midwest Nordic Rendezvous, that’s what!  Timber Ridge will be the site for this exciting, first-ever nordic ski clinic event.  We were able to get Greg Rhodes,  Colorado National Team Nordic Specialist,  to conduct a series of clinics for middle and high school skiers and adult beginners on Saturday and then four more clinics on Sunday for Michigan Cup skiers.  Check out the application

Changes for 2017
October 05, 2016

The 2017 version of the North American VASA will be an exciting event this year, with a new course and new format to help you enjoy your VASA race experience even more than ever! Make a note of the changes to get the very most pleasure out of our Festival of Races that you can.

This year we will have a "Vasa vice versa." That's right, we will be reversing the direction of the course, just to keep you on your toes (skis)!  If you are worried about racing DOWN the dreaded "wall," fear not! Racers will instead be going around it, through an amazing section of the Pere Marquette Forest.

The second big change is separate freestyle and classic days.

  • Saturday will be the freestyle day, with 48km, 28km, 11km and 6km races. 10km and 42km fat bike races and the Junior Vasa will also be on Saturday.
  • Sunday will be the classic day, with 34km, 16km and 6km races on a double-tracked course.

This change is to provide a better quality race experience for the classic skiers and encourage more classic skier participation.  If a classic skier really wants to slug through a 48km race (e.g., to prepare for the Birkie), they can still do so on Saturday with the freestylers because there will be a set of tracks.

Vasa Trail Update
September 14, 2016

Traverse Area Recreation Trails (TART) posted a notice received from the DNR that a logging operation on the Vasa is set to begin as early as today and will be completed no later than December 1.  The section of woods that will be logged is to the north of Timber Ridge and will be near the section of the 25K in a few spots.  A 60 foot buffer will be left along the Vasa where they will selectively be harvesting only Aspen and Red Pine.  The greatest impact to the trail will be a short section where trucks will be hauling trees out to access a powerline for their transport.  We wanted to make sure everyone is aware of this logging operation and it's potential impact on the trail.  We have been assured that any trail damage, which is expected to be minimal, will be addressed and that the trail will be left in good condition.

TART also said they were are working with the DNR starting this week to address the erosion issues on the Headwaters 5K section of the Vasa following last fall's logging in that area.  TART will be laying down gravel in the areas most effected in that section and in a few other areas on the Vasa Pathway that are showing signs of serious erosion from the heavy rains over the past few weeks.

All of this is in an effort to maintain a sustainable trail that provides the best cross country skiing experience possible.

TART will continue to provide updates on both of these operations and looks forward to another fantastic season of winter trails ahead.  More on that soon!
