Vasa Nation: It is time to let the good times, and the fatties, roll! Amazing men and women on fat tire machines will be cruising on an expertly crafted and groomed single track trail for the Vasa Fat Bike Race on Saturday, February 11 at Timber Ridge. This is the third annual event for this race, which is becoming more popular every year. Vasa Board member and Fat Bike Race Director John Roe has many years of experience cycling, racing and (lucky for us) grooming trails. The Vasa Fat Bike race will be the second of the four-part Short's Brewing Fat Bike Series (SBFBS). "These events celebrate fat tires, good times, Shorts Beer, and a beautiful northern Michigan winter," says John. "And I want this one to be the best fat tire bike event out there." John has a dedicated crew, who massage and stroke the single track to perfection. They play the single track like B.B. King played his guitar Lucille. But the thrill is definitely not gone, folks. Get ready for one sweet ride.
The SBFBS is a tandem effort by Einstein Cycles and Short's Brewing (bicycles and beer - what a concept, eh?), which, according to Einstein's Cody Sovis, "features the fastest riders and nicest people in northern Michigan. The series opened at Crystal Mountain with the Fat Chance! on January 21. By Vasa race time on February 11, we'll have a good idea of who is on form and who needs to make up some ground at one of the most prestigious races on the calendar. "
Sovis notes, "even though the Vasa fat bike course is new for 2017, familiar sections such as Riley's Loop, Logger's Run and a thrilling finishing sprint remain highlights of the course. And the 42km is a throwback to the glory days of long, cold races that have established Traverse City as a world-class fat bike race town."
Some of you may be doing the math and figuring that 42 km is just too many kliks to be thinking about that first Huma Lupa Licious. No worries, Bunky. Do the 10km and then head in to the event tent at Timber Ridge for a cold one. No shame in your game. You can check out the course maps on our website, www.vasa.org.
Weather permitting, the Fat Bike Nation will have a chance to preview the race course this coming Friday, January 27. Einstein Racing-Short's Brewing team members will lead groups out on the 10 and the 42km trails. Choose the two-lap tour of the shorter course, which should take an hour or so at a no-drop pace. Or go for a one-lap tour with one of two groups on the 42km course. Then enjoy a Bellaire Brown or Huma Lupa with the big boys. You earned it.
