Welcome to the North American Vasa Festival of Races!
What's New in 2020
We are pleased to welcome the Chemical Bank and Short's Brewing Company back as our co-title sponsors for the 3rd year! Actually, both have been with us for even longer as sponsors. These good people do more than write a check. They have genuine interest in the community. Plus their employees participate as volunteers and racers. Thanks to them and all our generous sponsors for making this race weekend financially viable and FUN!
The 2020 Short's Brewing Company - Chemical Bank North American Vasa will be another exciting event this year. We are confident that the weather gods will look favorably upon us again, as they have the last three years. When other ski races have had to cancel or modify their courses due to the warming winters, we have been able to pull off our races as planned every year.
Clockwise or Counter Clockwise Course?
The big question... which direction will the courses go this year? The now famous Vasa Vice Versa strategy goes to a new level this time, so listen up: Saturday's freestyle races will go counterclockwise, BUT the classic races on Sunday will go clockwise. Why are we doing it this way? Just to confuse you? Actually, this is all part of our strategy to make course signage less confusing. In the past, we have signed both day's races together (for logistical reasons), and the barage of signs was a bit overwhelming. This new approach will allow us to sign the classic and freestyle races going in the opposite directions so you don't see quite as many signs.
NEW! The Vasasaurus Stomp
We are excited to announce the addition of an 8km snowshoe race to the Sunday lineup. The goal is to make Sunday more festive and fun. The "Vasasaurus Stomp" will be on ungroomed snow, and guaranteed to be family friendly and fun. Rumor has it that the Vasasaurus will be making a personal appearance after many years of retirement!
Fat Bike Fun
In the fat bike division, the King Vasa Fatbike Races will feature a 2-lap 35km race (Short’s Grand Fat) and a 1-lap 13km race (Short’s-N-Fat). These races are part of the Short's Brewing Fat Bike Series. The course will be a new, improved version of last year, with the 13 km racers having their own separate course. You'll love it!
Our "Combo Race" offerings will again include the "Triple Threat" (Only one human has completed this one. Dan Novak needs competition!), the Michigan Cup Challenge, and the SkiFatalon. The NEW Michigan Cup Challenge races will now include the 25km freestyle ski race on Saturday (instead of the 50km race), and the 17km classic ski race on Sunday. This was a decision of the Michigan Cup Race Board, not the North American Vasa. The SkiFatalon will take on a new twist this year as it will be a team event. Yes, you can be your own team if you choose to not include a co-conspirator. Thanks to Suttons Bay Bikes for sponsoring the awards for the SkiFatalon!
King Vasa Viking Club
The North American Vasa tracks the number of years you have raced and awards year pins accordingly to anyone who wants them. Stop by the Year Pin Booth in the Event Tent to pick up yours! NEW! This year, those in our prestigious King Vasa Viking Club (20+ race years completed) get a super-cool iron-on patch to help you show off your accomplishment.
Stay tuned for another GREAT Vasa year!
